Induction And Training
Learning the Essentials
Your first five weeks with Westgate House Children’s Home are designed to immerse you in our values, vision, and approach to childcare. During induction, you will complete our Skills to Care training programme, covering modules such as Recording and Reporting, Health and Safety, First Aid, Risk Management, Key Working, and Safer Handling of Medication.
Hands-on Learning
From weeks two to four, your training moves into our homes. You’ll shadow experienced residential staff, gaining insight into daily practice, before stepping into our new worker shift pattern to take a more hands-on role. This blend of classroom and field-based learning ensures you develop both the knowledge and confidence to provide outstanding care.
Skills to Care
Our training equips every team member with the skills, resilience, and compassion needed to support children effectively, ensuring consistency and excellence across all our homes.
Building Skills, Step by Step
In the fifth week of induction, colleagues step away from residential practice to complete the second stage of our Skills to Care programme. This phase deepens the knowledge gained so far, with modules covering Legislation Awareness, Safeguarding 360, and Attachment. It also includes our PRICE-accredited Behaviour Management and Holistic Approach to Intervention training, equipping staff with practical strategies to support children effectively.
Ready to Start
By the sixth week, colleagues will have completed all training required to be fully compliant with our Residential Support Worker policy for one year. At this stage, they return to the residential home and join the full shift pattern alongside their team. Depending on start dates, the first and second weeks of induction may be swapped, ensuring flexibility while maintaining the same comprehensive learning journey.
Empowering Our Colleagues Through Learning
Ongoing training is at the heart of our culture. From day one, every colleague participates in a structured programme embedded with our REACH therapeutic philosophy, ensuring child-centred approaches remain central to all learning. Training covers safeguarding, PRICE-accredited behavioural support, and the CACHE-accredited Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare. This equips staff not only to meet the complex needs of children but also to gain qualifications that advance their professional careers.
Each home also benefits from a bespoke therapeutic learning package, designed with our partners at New Ways Safeguarding and delivered by in-house Programme Specialists. Topics include attachment, childhood trauma, and therapeutic play, taught through a blended mix of classroom sessions, video facilitation, and online courses. Regular reviews by experienced trainers ensure content stays relevant, practical, and up to date.
